Hangar Party 05/07/10

On the evening of May 7th, 2010 and a beautiful evening it was as members and friends gathered at Dewey and Sandy Harnagel’s hangar for the annual Blue Sky Flyers Hangar Party. The theme for this year’s event was "Country". That’s NOT cowboy country….….but farmer country with favorite home cooked recipes to be shared in a Pot Luck style event. Everyone was to bring food to share. They could choose meat dishes, side dishes, desserts…….the idea was to bring one or more of your favorite selections. That’s what makes it truly a “Pot Luck” affair!

As the day wound down, everyone began arriving for the early evening potluck dinner while taking in the sights and sounds we find so typical of our airport. Sights and sounds that so often bring goose bumps to aviators, as only they know what those pilots still out there flying were enjoying. A few lucky aviators were still out, some just retuning to their home base, others still working the DVT pattern making their last “touch and goes” for the day. If you looked between the hangars, one could catch a glimpse of the setting sun making for a lovely view of the desert landscape and the surrounding mountains. The weather folks once again were most cooperative for our hangar-dining event providing beautiful springtime weather, clear skies, a very comfortable 88 degrees with almost no wind. Perfect weather conditions and a perfect place combined with the camaraderie of great friends and invited guests meeting one another and having dinner together while relaxing outdoors.

Sandy and Dewey were gracious hosts opening their hangar to our ABSF group and guests. This was most appreciated. Sandy, Margaret and Gert worked together on the food preparation and tables getting everything organized while “slaving” over several hot crock-pots. Dewey, Keith and Jim tended to numerous other odds and ends. Together, they all made a heck of a team working to insure everything went just right, including helping the 4-50’s band members get their equipment set up.

Keith and Margaret came up with a fun party game called "WhoAmI".  They put a bunch of celebrity names in a hat and everyone had to draw a name without looking at it.  The name then got pinned on the back of your collar so every one else could see it but you.  Throughout the evening people were to give you clues about what celebrity you were and you had to guess who you were.  The first three to guess who they were got a prize.  Below, Keith is telling us the rules of the game and Margaret is displaying her "Celebrity" identity.

Everyone including our guests played a part and did a wonderful job with the food and provisions brought to this dinner. Take a look at the spread we had to select from, roast beef and gravy, chicken casserole, scalloped potatoes, baked beans, a 7 layer salad, Margaret’s home made dinner rolls and more, were served. As you can tell, there was plenty of variety and certainly an ample amount of food for all to enjoy. Oh yes……….and desserts too; Rhubarb Pie, Sour Cream Cobbler, Berry Crunch and Coconut Cake to top off the meal.

The 4-50’s band was there to provide entertainment for the evening. Dewey and band members T.J., Phil and Kimball played and sang a variety of songs from the 50’s. Numerous old favorites including A White Sport Coat, Elvis’s Hound Dog, Kicks on Route 66, Doo Wop harmonies of the Platters, Ricky Nelson’s Hello, Mary Lou to name just a few……………. echoed through the north hangar area on into the evening hours.

In a more somber moment, Dewey made a few comments in recognizing Jim Burch, who had only recently flown west. Jim, one of the founding members of the Arizona Blue Sky Flyers, was active in the club for many years. Dewey and the band played and sang Only You, a music favorite of Jim and Syble Burch.

Below, for your curiosity and enjoyment, is an assortment of pictures taken during the hangar party.
