Two airplanes containing 6 people flew in to the Sierra Vista airport on Thursday afternoon October 16th. After picking up our rental car and checking into our motel, we met up with charter ABSF member, Dick McColley who now lives in Sierra Vista. We stopped by the local KFC to pick up some take out, then proceeded to a beautiful park just a couple of blocks from our motel and had a picnic. After the picnic we all went to Dick's house which overlooks the area and enjoyed a glass of wine and some good conversation up on Dick's observation deck. Dick's house sits out away from the city lights and we were all amazed at how bright the stars were.
On Friday morning we again met up with Dick and the 7 of us made our way over to Tombstone to take in the Helldorado days. They have about two blocks of main street blocked off and all day long there was continuous entertainment. There were singers, dancers, skits and lots of shoot outs including the gunfight at the OK corral. About half the people on the streets were dressed in period costumes and everyone was having a good time.
That evening we drove back to Sierra Vista and went out to the Sierra Vista airport. The airport was being closed that evening for a military training exercise. The Marines were supposed to fly in with several Ospreys, drop off troops etc and we thought it might be interesting. The Ospreys did show up but it was too dark to really see anything and where they landed was over a mile from where we were so it was sort of a non event.
On Saturday morning, after breakfast, we drove out east of Sierra Vista to the San Pedro House. It is an old ranch house along the Sam Pedro River that has been turned into a book store and visitor center. There is a huge cottonwood tree there who's trunk must be 10 or 12 feet in diameter. It was a great trip. Sorry the rest of you missed it.
